Matías Catalán

Matías Catalán

Actor – Film & Theater

Matías Catalán is a Chilean actor and stage artist, lead actor in “THE MYSTERIOUS GAZE OF THE FLAMINGO” (dir. Diego Céspedes), selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Set in the Chilean desert during the 1980s amidst the AIDS crisis, the film marks a powerful debut—his performance, subtle yet emotionally charged, positions him as one of Latin America’s most compelling new cinematic voices.

With a captivating screen presence and a deep commitment to complex, character-driven narratives, Catalán is emerging as a significant figure in contemporary cinema. His sensitivity to silence, emotional tension, and internal landscapes makes his work both intimate and resonant.

He holds a degree in Acting and Stage Direction from Universidad Mayor, and a diploma in Theatre and Education from Universidad de Chile. In theatre, he has performed in over a dozen productions across Chile’s independent scene, including Yeguas Sueltas, Re-Habítame, Xáos, and Los Escultores.

His film work also includes  “ORO AMARGO” (Juan Olea, 2025) and “DEL AMOR AL MAR” (Lucas Eckolt). On television, he appears in “LA CACERÍA: EN EL FIN DEL MUNDO” (Juan Ignacio Sabatini, 2024). He has trained under actors such as Amalia Kassai and Roberto Matus.

Matías Catalán doesn’t merely act—he inhabits. His arrival at Cannes is not just a debut, but a confirmation: a new voice has emerged in Latin American cinema, with truth at its core.
